The Social Security Federal Holiday Schedule for 2022 & 2023

Social Security offices are open five days a week Monday – Friday between 9 am and 4 pm. Some locations do close earlier on Wednesdays so you may need to double check these hours with your local office.

As of 2022 there are now officially 11 Federal holidays recognized in the United States with the recent addition under President Joe Biden of Juneteenth.

These eleven calendar dates are designated as Federal holidays on which those working for the federal government receive a paid day off. This has expanded beyond just the government employees. It takes an act of congress to designate a federal holiday.

History of Federal Holidays

It was on June 28^th of 1870 that congress agreed to the creation of Federal holidays. States were already celebrating certain days as holidays but there was no uniformity to this. The act of congress would serve to create set dates by which the entire country could abide.

The first four holidays recognized were New Years Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Initially these federal holidays only applied to employees in the District of Columbia but in 1885 it was extended to all federal employees of the United States.

Gradually over the years other holidays have joined the list including notable President's birthdays and celebrations of major historical individuals.

In the event that a holiday falls upon a weekend the federal holiday may be observed the day preceding or succeeding the actual holiday itself. This is to ensure employees actually receive a day off in observance of the holiday.

If these days occur on a weekend day that the federal workers would already be not working then the closest weekday becomes the observed holiday in terms of not working.
